Summary of Meeting:
This Keystone Symposia conference will bring together world-leading researchers in the burgeoning field of proteomics, which is the large-scale study of the expressed proteins in biological systems. In comparison to genomics, proteomics has historically been limited by the available technology. However, this has now changed as the field has matured considerably over the last few years. Indeed, the proteomics field is at a critical junction, where very powerful technologies are now at our disposal. However, often the creativity evident within the proteomics disciplines does not extend to the creation of strategies that combine different approaches to study cellular phenomena. For instance, structural biologists use electron tomography of the entire cell and combine this with mass spectrometry to obtain a view of protein complexes or ‘machineries’ that could not be achieved by each field working in isolation. The meeting will be unique in bringing together researchers from a diverse set of backgrounds that have now begun to transcend the boundaries of single-technology approaches. This conference will address how to make best biological, biotechnology and clinical use of the tremendous opportunities that these technologies now provide. The speakers will lay out the achievements and the challenges of each field and illustrate the power of proteomics with specific cell biological or clinical applications. Importantly, many of the speakers will outline how they have begun to combine fundamentally different proteomics technologies to address biological questions. Participants can then together discuss and devise novel proteomic approaches to many biological and clinical questions.
